I would have to say that the carnivorous island represents sin. He learns that he can't live alone (as an island = without his faith in God) and choose to come back to his faith, even with a such uncertain path ahead, but with a meaning to his existence (spiritual, at least). Lotus hide in a forest?" (Indian Culture consider lotus flower a symbol to knwoledge and learning - ). The fruit with a teeth in the island opens like a Lotus flower, answering his own question to Anandhi "why would a The silhouette of a man represents himself (Pi) living isolated = as an island, in opposition to the same silhouette showed at the beggining of the movie ( 1:22 ) surrounded by other lands and people when he is In the island (just like in life) there is a society, there are food and shelter, but at the end everything will be taken back, making your existence meaningless.

The island represents a life without God. The island scene take place right after he fights with God in a clear sign that he is giving up of his faith. We can't forget that this is a story that, as said by old Pi, "will make you believe in God". (perhaps the dark side of the island is the decaying, rotting flesh of the cook.) But before he does, he stuffs himself "til his stomach can hold no more" and gathers as many meercats as he can as "sustenance for Richard Parker". Pi eats the roots and seeds while Richard Parker eats the flesh of the island.īut ultimately, Pi sees that the dark side of this will eventually consume him and he must move on. But we see it's shape is that of a sarcophagus, or mummy, or dead man. The thousands of meercats represent the life-giving flesh of the island. But he needed to tame it to keep himself alive. He "needed the tiger in order to survive". We also know that Pi coexisted with the tiger, as though Pi and the tiger are not one & the same - demonstrating Pi's inner struggle - peaceful vegetarian vs killer/carnivore/(cannibal). We know that Pi (tiger) killed (and possibly ate) the cook (hyena). OK, assuming the 2nd story is the true one, then we analyze the symbolism in the first story and accept the assignment of the animals to people given by the author/narrator, which concludes with ".and you are the tiger." The carnivorous island is the carnivorous (cannibalistic) cook. I'm having trouble fitting all the pieces together, and I could be wrong about the whole thing.

I think this could mean that, having lost his faith, he is free to take nourishment (and knowledge?) from his surroundings while he's awake but when he's asleep at night, he is unprotected.Īlso, do you think there is a reason why the island looks like a man lying on his back? Pi and Richard Parker both find food and nourishment on the island, but what the island gives them during the day, it takes away at night. They then drift overnight to the carnivorous island. Pi's boat is caught in a storm and the scene ends with Pi screaming (at God?) "I lost my family, my everything. I think it might symbolize Pi's lack of faith. This leads me to believe that the Island, like the animals from the original story, is a symbol for something. It's made clear at the end of the film that the Japanese insurance agents think it's highly unlikely that the island exists, which is exactly what they think about Pi's original story.

What I haven't understood is the significance of the carnivorous island that Pi encounters on his journey. This is the first instance where Pi replaces the traumatizing, believable details from his story with euphemistic symbols. In the end, we're told that the Zebra symbolizes the sailor, the Orangutan his mother, the Hyena is the brutish cook and Richard Parker the Bengal Tiger is Pi himself. Pi, understandably, replaces traumatizing details from the story of his survival to construct an alternate story which is full of unbelievable detail but is essentially the same.
